History

In 1897, a grocer and postmaster from Lake Worth, Florida named John Newton Clarke filed a 139-acre homestead claim for a piece of land near a lake on the Eastern coast of Florida. Clarke intended to grow pineapples. Unfortunately, Clarke's pineapple business bombed due to a newly constructed Key West railway that allowed Cuban pineapple growers to corner the market.

Clarke's pineapple business may have failed, but the land that he cultivated would one day become the city of Lake Clarke Shores, Florida. Lake Clarke Shores remained a sleepy fishing retreat until other settlers began to arrive in the 1930s.

Lake Clarke Shores Begins to Take Shape 

In the early 1930s, a failed land speculator turned friendly hermit named Zeb Vance Hooker and his family settled in rural Lake Clarke Shores. Hooker lived a quiet life raising chickens while squatting on government land, In 1946, a settler named Pasty Renolds built what is currently the oldest standing house in Lake Clarke Shores.

In the late 1940s, a lawyer named Walter Travers sought to transform Lake Clarke Shores into a thriving waterside community. Travers became interested in the area after he learned that some of the land had been drained during the construction of the nearby West Palm Beach Canal 30 years earlier. Lake Clarke Shores initially grew very slowly because it was largely inaccessible. There was no bridge across the West Palm Beach Canal to connect the community with surrounding towns. In 1953, a bridge was finally completed and development in the area began to accelerate.

Modern Lake Clarke Shores

In 1956, Lake Clarke Shores was incorporated. Many Lake Clarke Shores residents banded together to prevent their town from being annexed by nearby West Palm Springs. By 1960, Lake Clarke Shores had a population of 1,297 people. In the late 1960s largely residential Lake Clarke Shores became home to several business properties including a gas station.

Today, Lake Clarke Shores is a tight-knit community of approximately 3,600 residents. One of the grand highlights of Lake Clarke Shores is a dedicated volunteer garden club that works to educate residents about native plants and wildlife. The Lake Clarke Shores Garden Club works to cultivate Florida's luscious subtropical greenery and keep their charming town beautiful.

Housing and Population Statistics 

Over the last two decades, the population in Lake Clarke Shores has increased by roughly 200 people. As of 2019, the population was estimated to be just over 3,600 people keeping it one of the smallest towns in Palm Beach County.

Geography and Climate

Located in Palm Beach County Florida, Lake Clarke Shores has a total area of 1.04 square miles, most of which is land. It offers easy access to I-95, Palm Beach International Airport, and is only minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean. It is also a short drive away from downtown West Palm Beach, CityPlace, roughly 60 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, and roughly 2 1/2 hours from Orlando.

Lake Clarke Shores Florida has beautiful weather year-round! The “hot season” lasts for 4 months from May 29th to September 29th with an average temperature in the mid to high 80s while the “cool season” lasts for almost 3 months from December 5th to March 1st with the average temperature in the mid 70’s, but temperatures do occasionally drop down into the 40’s.

Lake Clarke Shores has a 6% sales tax rate, 0% income tax rate, and a median household income of $78,000. As far as employment there aren't many job opportunities within the town limits of Lake Clarke Shores, but there are plenty of opportunities close by.
