How to Turn Your Bedroom into a Relaxing Retreat

How to Turn Your Bedroom into a Relaxing Retreat

If you are sleeping better at a hotel or at a friend’s place because of the relaxing and appealing ambiance of their bedroom, maybe it’s time your own bedroom got a makeover. Studies in the past have shown how having a good bedroom environment can make it much easier for someone to achieve a good night’s sleep.

Factors such as light, temperature, noise, smell, and cleanliness can have a lot of impact on the quality of sleep we receive. We have therefore compiled a list of some easily manageable changes that you can bring to your bedroom to turn it into an absolute relaxing retreat.

How to Turn Your Master Bedroom into a Relaxing Retreat

#01 Uncluttered Room

Before beginning the part where you start putting effort into decorating the bedroom and making it appealing to the senses and turning it into a relaxing retreat the room has to be decluttered from the unnecessary multitude of things. Establish a rule that your bedroom doesn’t have any space whatsoever for electronics, piles of unwashed clothes, toys belonging to kids, books, and magazines. To better manage the space around the bedroom, try opting for larger closed storages like cupboards or wardrobes that are built-in the walls rather than independent furniture.

#02 Exclusive Bedspace

Now that you have got the space around the room managed, make sure that your bed is reserved for the act of sleeping. Keep all your stuff related to work, hobbies, and eating away from your bed. This will allow the mind to naturally associate the bed exclusively with sleeping and make it easier for you to doze off soon after you lay on it.

Make sure that you make your bed after getting up in the morning to return to a more organized and inviting bed. Consider decorating the space above the bed in particular as this sets the general tone of the bedroom. Having a headboard that spans across the wall behind the bed or covers the entire space above the bed is also a good way to manage that space.

#03 Noise-Free Zone

Your bedroom is the calmest part of the house, make sure it stays that way. Use noise-blocking blinds and curtains to prevent the threat of any external noise. This is another reason why electronics like TVs and computers should stay away from your bedroom. To make things easier you can try investing in a white noise machine that masks any external noise and soothes your mind with natural sounds such as that of raindrops, sea waves, and waterfalls.

Sitting Area for Your Master Bedroom#04 A Place to Sit

To make sure that that the bed is used for rest, consider drawing a separate space in the bedroom. A place where you can place a sofa, a recliner, or simply a couple of armchairs.

Having a sitting place next to a balcony or a window can give you that refreshing feel. Yet still be performing activities such as working, listening to soft music, or reading a book.

#05 Pleasant Smell

Many people consider taking a bath with luxury soap or essential oils before sleeping to invoke a relaxing feel. Similarly, you must get rid of any foul smell from your bedroom. So you should allow proper airflow in the bedroom to make your bedroom pleasing to your olfactory nerves. Using essential oils in a diffuser can help you improve the smell of the room and give it a pleasing aroma, ideal for a relaxing retreat. Although foul smells are not known to wake one up from sleep, a pleasant smell can help relax us. Smells such as lavender, jasmine, peppermint, or chamomile can even make it easier to fall asleep.

#06 Ideal Temperature

Most sleep experts believe that the bedroom temperature under which we sleep in dictates our sleep quality. While different people feel at ease at different temperature levels, the optimal bedroom temperature is believed to be between 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure that the bedding and mattress you use doesn’t trap heat. Because if it does it can often interrupt your sleep and increase nighttime sweating and restlessness, which is far from a relaxing retreat. Consider installing a stone fireplace in your bedroom, minding the safety protocols of course. A fireplace can give it a warm and relaxing feeling of a mountain retreat in the winters.

#07 Visually Appealing

Be mindful of the colors you pick for your bedroom if comfort and relaxation is your priority. Instead of bright and stimulating colors like gold or red go for other milder colors. Colors that soothe your mind and promote good sleep. Prefer muted and toned-down shades such as that of light blue, green, silver, etc. Bring a touch of art into your bedroom! The art should complement the walls with adequate pieces such as paintings, decorative plates, and photo frames People living in rental spaces may want to opt for more non-permanent ideas to decorate their walls.

Tranquil Bedroom Ideas#08 Soft and Comfy

Whenever we picture having a good night’s sleep, the idea of plush pillows and soft blankets fill our minds. The ideal retreat of your dreams needs a suitable carpet or a rug on the floor. Plus, lush sheets with a thread count upwards of 400.

Make sure that the bedding is made of soft yet breathable material such as silk, linen, or bamboo sheets. Choose a mattress that is not only soft and comfortable but also provides enough support. The InsideBedroom has a collection of a range of different mattresses suited to your specifications.

#09 Appropriately Lit

A good amount of exposure to natural sunlight or bright light in the day boosts the regulation of your circadian rhythm. The idea is to allow a good deal of natural light to come in through your window in the daytime. Make sure your room has good mirrors that make the room appear bigger and reflect light. In the absence of enough natural light, make sure that artificial lighting is bright enough to cover for it.

However, shift to dimmer lights after the sun sets to gradually prepare your mind for the sleep ahead. For the same reasons, stay away from electronics that emit blue light such as smartphones and laptops. These items can inhibit the production of melatonin in the body. You can also experiment with other types of lights such as singular chandeliers, hanging light fixtures, and smart lights that can be adjusted according to the mood.

Final Thoughts:

There are plenty of wonderful places around the world which are known as popular spots for people looking for a relaxing retreat. However, due to the fast-paced modern world, it is not feasible. Not everyone can flee to such places every now and then to soothe your mind. Not to mention the impact such visits can have on your pocket. We, therefore, hope that the aforementioned tips help you convert your bedroom into a relaxing retreat.
